WOW - the east coast is AMAZING!! Today Bryan and I flew into Boston, Mass to begin our anniversary trip. Our flight was late (huge surprise), but it was so worth it. We attempted to navigate through Boston, but decided to wait until Saturday. So, we got on Highway 1A and headed to the coast.
A short drive, in our 'oh so fun' 2007 convertible Mustang, we arrived at our B&B, the Oceanwatch, pictured to the left- located on the tip of Marblehead, Massachusetts overlooking the water and views that are just breathtaking. We stopped at the Barnacle for lunch and shared a delicious fish sandwich and some of the best Seafood Chowder and Lobster Bisque ever! After lunch we walked along the coast, taking a nice breather at Fort Sewell - which was built in the early 1700's to protect against the British attacks. It was spectacular - of course I might be biased as I was able to take a nice nap in the sunshine and ocean breeze, right there at the Fort.
Bryan and I then retired to our room, for another nap (we did have to be at the airport at 4am) - after resting up, we trekked down through historic Marblehead, headed to the infamous Maddie's Sail Loft bar...this bar is renowned among sailors. Bryan was thrilled! We had some fantastic chowder, crab cakes and went along our way. Of course we picked up a hat for Bryan, and quickly decided that buying the souvenir thong panties for me, was NOT an option...seriously, they had thongs. We then headed to the Spirit of 76 bookstore. We picked up a few books for vacation reading all highly recommended by the avid reader/salesman.
As we strolled along the curvy streets of Marblehead, we found ourselves stopping near the local grocery, only to notice the many people walking with blankets and chairs toward something. Our curiosity got the best of us, as we followed the troops, we came upon the Marblehead Festival of the Arts. This fest was located on the edge of the water...but unlike many beaches, it is so high above the water, on the rocky coast - just phenomenal. We enjoyed a couple of sets of cool jazz, while sitting on the rocks - just breathtaking.
Our walk back to our B&B was only interrupted by a stop at The Barnacle. We had discussed that the feeling in Marblehead was so Americana...the history of the buildings, some dating back as far as 1699 - to the celebratory impending 4th of July - banners hanging from all of the windows and doors. The only thing missing was apple pie - so we stopped and had some!
We both slept like babies, as we had our windows open to the fresh, salty sea breeze. The waves breaking on the rocky shores completely coincided with the deep slumber we both were in. Marblehead, Massachusetts is wonderful - looking forward to our next visit back!
We're off to Rockport, Mass tomorrow...
