We didn't want to leave the Captain's House but after a short drive, we arrived in another really neat town...Portsmouth, New Hampshire (pronounced Portsmith). Our accommodations in Portsmouth were a bit different than the other 2 B&Bs...we stayed at the Bow Street Inn, a gorgeous old brick building with a theatre below. The Inn was more 'hotel like' than Bed & Breakfast, but comfy and very conveniently located to walking through town.
With advice from the Innkeeper, we walked along the water to "Geno's Chowda House" - really some of the best 'chowda' ever!
Today really was all American - as we were getting ready to leave Geno's we were introduced to a new American citizen - who was welcomed with a standing ovation at the restaurant - it was quite cool.
We walked to Strawberry Banke (pictured), although it sounds like a fruit stand - it is actually an entire village within Portsmouth that has been maintained as it was in the late 1700's and early 1800's. We were able to tour the many homes, furnished with the same furniture the families had so many years ago. Of course, because it was the 4th of July - there was a huge celebration there all day; including musket firings, a horse drawn carriage, Navy Band, presentations of historical information, a citizen naturalization ceremy and we even met President Abe Lincoln and his wife!!
After our fill of history, we walked through Market Center and shopped for a bit and had dinner at The Gas Light - yum-o!
We weren't able to catch any fireworks as they had been the night before and the surrounding towns' fireworks were cancelled due to weather - we headed back to our room and nestled in for the night.
Off to Brooklin for the 5th...OUR ANNIVERSARY DAY!!!!!
